Jetty Island

The girls and I went to Jetty Island in Everett with a friend and her daughter yesterday. This was our fourth time to the island and once again I am wondering why we don’t do it more often.

Jetty Island is a man-made sand bar with a long sandy beach and warm knee deep water just 30 minutes from Seattle. Most people access the island via a 5 minute ride on a 60 seat Argosy ferry. Advanced booking removed the stress over waiting in line for the ferry – a big headache on really nice days. The island is relatively uncrowded because limited ferry seats with limited runs means limited people. Also, people are constantly leaving because a return ticket is required on the limited runs back  – everyone can’t go home on the last ferry. There are few conveniences – pit toilets on the dock, tiny snack shack, and some park rangers that help with logistics and run a few nature programs. Other than that everything we need has to be carried on to the island.

Sand forever

Sand forever

It was low tide when we got there at 10:45 and by the time we left at 3:30 the tide had come in almost to the high tide point. I’m guessing the difference in tide points was about 75 yards. The water isn’t much deeper than above the adult knee for a long way and the water is warm. The girls had a blast digging in the sand and playing in the water while I camped out under my umbrella and caught with my friend.
